文章中这样用的分号出现过多次，说实在的，此前我也没见过，开始译的时候弄得我很郁闷，读不通，后来才闹明白。

您说的那句是个宗教故事，说天主教圣女诺波加的：

A cook in the household of Henry of Rottenburg, she has, according to her master, the bad habit of feeding the poor. Her outraged mistress, Ottilia, orders her to give leftovers only to the pigs. Be it tenacity or stubbornness, she decides to save her own food on Fridays for the poor. One Friday, her master commands her to show him what she hides in her hands. Obediently, she conforms to his command but he only sees crumbs instead of food and vinegar instead of wine.

我译作：

作为哈藤堡的亨利伯爵府上的厨娘，诺波加常将冷饭残羹送给门外的贫人，这被她的主人视作恶习。愤怒的女主人奥帝利于是命令她只能将冷饭残羹喂猪。出于坚韧或是固执，她决定每天把自己的饭省下来，到星期五给贫人吃。有一个星期五，主人命令她交出藏在手里的东西，诺波加顺从地照做了。但是他只看到了面包屑——而不是面包，酸掉的酒——而不是葡萄酒。
