大致上说，很多从20年代穆斯林兄弟会开始的回归穆斯林原教旨运动，并不是回归到历史上的穆斯林传统，因而有别于普通的原教旨穆斯林。用"Radical Islam"这个词来区别于其它的原教旨穆斯林。
Radical这个词比较特别。比如这个例句：
(California.) : My boyfriend, he's, like, so radical!
没办法，英语是越来越不纯洁了。
radical词义演变历史如下：
Political sense of "reformist" (via notion of "change from the roots") is first recorded 1802 (n.), 1820 (adj.), of the extreme section of the British Liberal party ( radical reform had been a current phrase since 1786); meaning "unconventional" is from 1921. U.S. youth slang use is from 1983, from 1970s surfer slang meaning "at the limits of control."
所以radical意译成“激进改革派”是没有问题的。其它的翻译方式，还是更容易造成误解的。
