By now, I believe that most of you are aware of the devastating natural disasters that recently have impacted Myanmar and China. While there are no currently enrolled students from Myanmar attending Texas A&M, we are proud to have more than 700 currently enrolled students, as well as a number of former students, faculty, staff, and visiting scholars from China, many of whom have family and friends impacted by this tragedy.

The earthquake in China is the worst such natural disaster to hit that country in 30 years. And most of us can only imagine how difficult it is to be far away from home when such tragedies strike. In addition to the impact of this tragedy on members of the Aggie Family, the university’s friendship and numerous partnerships with the Chinese people deepen our concern. We remember well our own, not too distant, struggles with Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, and we remember the help and support of the Chinese faculty, students, and scholars, and many other international groups on campus, who volunteered alongside their fellow Aggies during those relief efforts.

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association, the International Programs for Students and our newly formed Confucius Institute are co-hosting a candlelight memorial and donation drive to help the China earthquake victims Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Rudder Fountain. I encourage you to attend and show your support for this important effort. Chinese students who need assistance during this difficult time are urged to contact the Student Counseling Center or the International Student Services Office. Faculty and staff should contact the Employee Assistance Program.

Please accept our deepest sympathies on behalf of International Programs and Texas A&M University for the terrible tragedy of the earthquake that has devastated Sichuan and caused so much sorrow in the lives of people there. We know that this is keenly felt throughout China, and throughout the world by those Chinese who live abroad, like you, and by the many friends of the Chinese people. We grieve with you for the loved ones who been lost and the lives that have been forever changed by this disaster.

We are also worried about you. While school is not in session right now, we know that this tragedy has impacted our Chinese students. It is never easy to be so far from home when something like this happens. We urge you to find comfort in conversations with friends and in actions that can help those at home. By now, you probably know that the Chinese Students and Scholars Association has partnered with the Chinese Consulate in Houston to collect donations for the relief efforts. If you want to help with that, you can contact CSSA through their website http://cssa.tamu.edu.

In addition CSSA, the Confucius Institute, and International Programs for Students have partnered to create a Candlelight Vigil for the victims of this tragedy. It will take place on Saturday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rudder Tower Fountain area near the Memorial Student Center (MSC). You are invited to join us in this very special ceremony to honor those who have lost their lives, been injured, or lost their homes, and to stand together in the united hope that many others may still be rescued.

For Anyone Impacted by the China Earthquake*

Disasters can make us all feel vulnerable, whether we are impacted directly or indirectly. Events such as earthquakes can seem to have no rhyme or reason as to how they start and the damage they can inflict upon people's property and their lives. Common feelings and reactions:

* Loss. We may experience the loss directly or indirectly. Sometimes one loss can remind us of other losses that we have had.

* Lack of control. Part of what makes all disasters so unnerving is they reveal our limitations as human beings. Despite our best human efforts, natural disasters can and do escape our ability to control them and the damage they can do. Innocent people can get hurt, property is destroyed, beautiful areas are ruined, and we can feel helpless.

* Emotional overload. We might be feeling like we can't catch our breath between disasters. We may find ourselves moody, irritable impatient or have difficulty concentrating. These are all normal reactions to catastrophic events.

* Fear of additional destruction. We don't know what will happen next, so we are in a state of alert.

* Uncertainty. We don't know when this situation will be contained, or if other disasters loom on the horizon; and if we are relocated, we don't know when we can return, and what may be facing us when we do. If we are assisting others, the indefinite nature of this event can also be stressful.

* Trauma associated with seeing so much destruction so close at hand. Seeing the tremendous destructive power of earthquakes and the possibility of being in harm's way can be very disturbing.

* Feelings that there should have been some way to prevent such a disaster from happening.

* Media coverage. When we view and review the damage repeatedly, we can all be impacted by the disaster.
