                MeeGo on HTC Desire

      • 家园 kind of makes sense though

Symbian is going to be killed off. MeeGo is just a "learning platform" for Nokia now, but without major device release on it, I don't think it will survive the war with Apple and Google.

Nokia's Steven Elop is right about one thing: it is a war about ecosystem, not just devices anymore. In this war, Google has the master plan and massive service platform behind it, Apple has the huge fan base and large application resource. Nokia? They are not even a real player. So what choices do they have? They still compare themselves with the big players like Apple and Google, and don't want to be followers in this game like Samsung and HTC (although it may not be such a bad idea), so Android is out of the picture. WebOs has been taken by its own "Turkey" HP. Meego is far from catching up. WP7 is left as the only choice. Plus Google doesn't really need Nokia, but Microsoft does. All and all, it is almost the only possible choice for Nokia.

But no actual device until end of 2011!? It's probably will be too late by then. At least nothing about Nokia and WP7 will be exciting enough to keep me wait for another year now. I'm probably more interested in a new custom Android rom than that at this point.

Interesting thing is companies like RIM are not even mentioned in such discussion anymore..

NOK should have bought PALM

They missed that opportunity. Now as you said, Elop opted to be the big fish in the small bond, rather than a small fish in the big pond. Android has its own preferred vendors: Motorola, HTC and Samsung. Motorola launched the first commercially successful Android phone and helped establish Android in the market; HTC made the first Android phone and the first Google phone, plus many successful Android handsets; Samsung made the 2nd Google phone and it has the scale. Nokia would not have preferred treatment in an Android Ecosystem.

But they can get preferred treatment from MS. Nokia to MS now is like Motorola to Google in 2009. Nokia is now the preferred vendor of WP, and they have the right to customize WP any way they want, something MS never granted to any other vendor. What will HTC and Samsung think? They will just drop WP and dedicate all their efforts to Android. Then the WP ecosystem becomes by and large an MS-NOK thing.

And yes, NOK's time-to-market is a major problem. WP7 on EXISTING hardware by the end of the year? I guess those guys did spend most of their time polishing PowerPoint.
