他们经营的农场或者牧场所在的土地，所有权其实在别人手里。这些农场主，同时也可能是雇主，雇佣农业工人从事生产。农场里的大型农具，也可能是租赁，而非购买的。他们这样的农民，算不算资本家呢？
这样的农民在北美不是主流，但是好像还不少。这是多伦多星报的一篇报道：
For instance, many farms operate under contract to agri-food corporations, giving them control over production methods and market access without explicitly owning the farm.
A majority of U.S. land in farms is owner-operated—just over 60 percent, according to the 2017 Census of Agriculture. The national share of farmland that is owner-operated has been relatively stable over the past 50 years, with a noticeable decline during the farm crisis of the 1980s.
中国古代也有所谓田骨（所有权）与田皮（经营权）的区分。我觉得现在中国的农民应该不算自耕农，因为土地属国有。当然，他们并不需要给地主交租，所以他们也不算佃农。
