Remodeling is such a complicated issue. I would rather talk about detail work than in general. Without seeing what your house, location, style......I am afriad that whatever I am saying is miss leading.

Regarding do it yourself: this varies greatly, all depends on who is doing the job, I have no idea how handy you are. In general, I would say leave the wiring, plumbing, framing to other, and drywall, painting, floor...finishing work to diy.

HD, lowes are designed with diy in mind.

About hiring contractor, I would never go out hire someone without see their prior work and get recommendation. And you have to put a lot of effort into the process.

You realy need to make sure you have no other problems before you start the Remodeling work, such as radon, dampness....

About floor material, for your purpose, 乒乓球桌或健身器什么, I think vinal should be ok.
